The Use and Importance of PVC Piping Color Codes

When it comes to plumbing and drainage systems, PVC or polyvinyl chloride is one of the most popular and trusted piping materials used, especially in the Philippines, because it is durable, cost-effective, easy to install, and environmentally friendly. On top of that, it is a widely accepted piping material for drain-waste-venting (DWV) systems, sewers, and potable water lines and distribution in all plumbing codes. PVC pipes are also used in other applications such as irrigation, conduit, and several industrial installations.

But did you know that a PVC pipe has more than one color? And it is not just for mere design or aesthetic purposes. In fact, it has varying color codes that are made to help differentiate the use of each pipe during the installation process.

What is the importance of PVC piping color codes?

PVC piping color codes are important because they help workers easily identify the kind of content that the pipe can carry; if they are hazardous or not. This also aids in the prevention of accidents from happening to the workers and in the facility. Each pipe is assigned to transport a specific content or fluid and must only be used for that specific purpose.

White

White PVC pipes are used for all types of applications, but they are most commonly used for plumbing, drainage, and irrigation.

Blue

Many water systems use blue PVC as their main pipe to transport water, ensuring that it is safe and potable.

Red

Red is the piping color code used for most fire systems.

Yellow

Yellow PVC pipes are the ones used for gas, oil, petroleum, and steam distribution systems.

Purple

For reclaimed water systems, purple is the piping color code used.

Green

Green PVC pipes are often used for sewage and drain lines.

Orange

Orange is the usual color code used for telecommunications as well as an alarm or signal line.

Grey

Grey PVC pipes are used for electrical conduits. Since this type of pipe is made to pull electrical wires, it can’t hold or transport pressured liquids.
